On a crisp October 21st, the DMW boss lit up Instagram with a sizzling video that captured his recent sit-down with ABC News, where he vividly illustrated the Afrobeats genre’s universal appeal.
In the video, a jubilant Davido declared himself the “King of Afrobeats”, describing it as a taste of hard-won fame, the sweet fruit of perseverance, and a journey that began back in his salad days. He announced with pride that he had gained respect and recognition in the western hemisphere.
When discussing his style of music and lifestyle, the OBO Crooner revealed that although his lifestyle and love of partying are influenced by Western culture, the majority of his songs have an African beat.

He said that pioneers of Nigerian music such as 2face, Psquare, and D’banj had influenced him in his early years. He was humming along to American rappers like 50 Cent, Ja Rule, Nelly, and Ludacris at the same time.
But Davido claims that while in college, he made the decision that would change his life—to go back to his roots in Nigeria and join the rapidly expanding Afrobeats movement.
