Couple arrested for planning self-kidnap to raise N5 million
A couple has been arrested on suspicion of kidnapping for N5 million ransom in Lagos state.
Lagos state Command spokesman SP Benjamin Hundeyin confirmed this on Saturday 29 April 2023.
The 53-year-old technician husband and her 48-year-old body massager and osteopath wife were arrested Wednesday and Thursday respectively after the man’s family reported an alleged abduction, Hundeyin said.
He alleged that the couple, who admitted to the crime, planned the self-kidnapping to raise N3million to buy back their house in Badaguri district of Lagos.
“The man conceived the idea and sold it to his wife. He didn’t deny it to the police. He said he did it by text message for a reason. He said he did it because he wanted to buy back his own house for N3 million.
“The man said he decided to organize a self-abduction because his brothers and sisters who were doing well and some people living abroad were not willing to help him financially.
“He insisted that if they heard about his wife’s kidnapping, he would negotiate with the kidnappers and pay them,” the man said. Pointing out that the couple was still living in their home in Badagry when they texted relatives about the kidnapping, he stressed that they met the woman and her three children when police visited the house on Tuesday.
He said the police asked the woman to follow them to Jija Police Headquarters, but the woman begged them to allow her to come the next Wednesday.
The woman came to the station as promised and was arrested for self-abduction, according to the image creator, and her husband was arrested the following day on Thursday.
“She admitted to aiding her husband’s crimes. She also admitted that her husband had discussed the matter with her and didn’t expect it to end negatively, so she gave her approval. “The woman claimed that if the plan had worked, it would have been easiest to raise the money and buy the house back, as her husband’s brothers in England were unwilling to help him.
Hundeyin claimed the woman provided an average of three clients with either bone adjustment or stroke massage at a cost of about N150,000 per person, depending on the patient’s condition.
However, the couple claimed to regret their actions and sought forgiveness from their families and the police.
The image creator said the suspect had advised the public to avoid crime and never take an interest in someone else’s family or wealth. He said the couple will soon be brought to justice.
