Charges against Manchester United footballer Mason Greenwood has been dropped after ‘withdrawal of key witnesses’.
The 21-year-old Forward faces allegations of attempted rape, controlling and coercive behavior, and assault. All three charges involved the same woman.
The Public Prosecutor’s Office (CPS) said it was “obligated to close the case” after “significant witnesses and newly uncovered materials” were retracted.

These developments “mean there is no longer a realistic prospect of a conviction,” she added. “In situations like this, we are obligated to close the case. We have explained our decision to all parties involved.”
The investigation began in January 2022, a little over a year ago. This year he was set for November 27th as his trial date.
A statement from Manchester United said:
“Manchester United takes note of the prosecutor’s decision to drop all charges against Mason Greenwood.
“The club will go through its own process before deciding on next steps. No further comments until this process is complete.”
Greenwood will not return to training or games during the trial period.
Greater Manchester Police (GMP) said the decision to drop charges was “not taken lightly”.
Chief Superintendent Michaela Carr, GMP’s public protection officer, said it was “just” that the military announced the latest developments given the “significant media coverage of this incident.”

“The investigative team is in regular contact with the legal department and has provided us with important updates so we understand why we are closing the case at this stage and that this decision was not taken lightly. doing.

“If you feel you are, or could be, a victim, don’t let this case stop you from seeking help.”
United announced on 30 January that they would not return to training or games “until further notice”.
Nike also suspended and later terminated its sponsorship deal with Greenwood, but Electronic Arts confirmed that he was removed from his FIFA 22 roster of games active.
The Bradford-born player worked his way through his academy for United before making his senior debut in the Champions League when he won against Paris Saint-Germain in March 2019.
He has an England international cap and is set to appear in the Nations’ league match against Iceland in September 2020.
